A beautiful page of the French esport was written on Saturday with the final of this first season of Iron Squid. LE Grand Rex was filled with over 2600 StarCraft II fans ready to watch four of the best players in the world disputing the title of Iron Squid.
After a slight delay because of technical issues with the English stream, the first semi-final could start. To begin the day, a TvT opposing MMA and aLive. If the majority of the observers expected a tight series, it was a vast understatement. The two players traded blow for blow during nearly three hours with a rare intensity, doing of this match one of longest Bo5 in the history. At the end of this confrontation, it was MMA which arises victorious 3 to 2, but if aLive had won, nothing could have been said.
It went on with the new version of traditional “David against Goliath” on the stage of Le Grand Rex. Symbol, the revelation of this competition faced NesTea the Zerg legend. And as in the history, David defeated his gigantic opponent. Symbol was brilliant, destabilizing NesTea on several occasions and making their match very spectacular. Despite his experience in ZvZ, NesTea did not succeed in adapting to Symbol and was beaten 3 to 1.
After a musical interlude with “Monsieur Vert” and a relaxed 2v2 having MoMaN-Norman versus ElkY-Kyan, it was time for the bronze match. Once again, it was an extremely tight series and it took 5 games to NesTea to secure a second consecutive podium at the expense of aLive. It was a ratherunfortunate day for aLive, he lost his two series 2 to 3 and could certainly have won both of them with a bit more luck. After this series, the spectators were ready for the great final.
In front of an overheated crowd, MMA would give a new demonstration of his talent and his astonishing TvZ. Symbol gave everything he had, and managed to take 2 maps to the Terran, but his opponent of the evening was too strong, and the room explodes when MMA get out of his booth to come and celebrate his title on stage wrapped in a Korean flag. MMA becomes thus the first Iron Squid, he leaves Paris with $12 500 and one -at the very least- unexpected trophy.
